A five-year-old boy is fighting for his life after running on to a road in Melbourne's south-east.

The boy was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital with critical head injuries after being struck just after 12.45pm near the corner of Mulguthrie Court and Frawley Road in Hallam.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the boy had stepped in front of a stationary bus that was letting off passengers when a car overtaking the bus hit him.

She said the boy had run onto the road.

The driver of the car is assisting police with their enquiries.

Initial reports to paramedics said the boy had been hit by a bus.
