A man has died after falling from the third-floor balcony of an apartment in Sydney's north-west, police say.

Police and paramedics were called to the apartment block on Cottonwood Crescent in Macquarie Park about 1am on Thursday to reports that a man was lying on the ground after falling about 10 metres from a balcony.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said emergency services arrived to find the man, aged in his 30s, suffering from serious head and internal injuries. Paramedics were unable to revive him, and he died at the scene.

The spokeswoman said police were still investigating the cause of the fall, and officers set up a crime scene at the apartment block.

However she said initial investigations suggested the fall was an accident and a result of "misadventure". No further details about the incident were immediately available.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
