Michael Barrymore was treated in hospital for a suspected head injury after being thrown from a horse while filming a new reality TV show.

The 58-year-old comedian was taking part in Channel 4 series Celebrity Coach Trip – which sees stars travel in Europe on a coach.

Barrymore lost a tooth and hit his head in the fall in Corsica.

He was treated there but needed further hospital treatment in the UK after he is said to have collapsed at his Essex home.

Barrymore is now in dispute with the production company, ITV Productions, about who should pay for an MRI scan.

Channel 4 said: ‘The production team took every measure to ensure the strict health and safety protocols in place were adhered to.’

A spokesman for Barrymore said last night: ‘Michael was thrown from a horse and chipped his tooth – also banging his head.’

The star recently had to dney that he was drunk and abusive to a French waiter and fellow competitors during the filming of the show.

It had been alleged that he had been guzzling wine and heckled fellow stars including Lizzie Cundy and Lembit Opik before launching a 'disgusting verbal attack' on a waiter as they ate a meal in Corsica, calling him a 'c***' before being thrown out.

However, Barrymore's spokesman told Mail Online that he had not been drinking but was 'very unsteady and disoriented' from heavy medication after being thrown from the horse earlier in the trip.

He said: 'Back in the UK, Michael had an MRI scan which revealed minor bleeding on the brain...He was not allowed to film for two days as a result of the fall.

'On one of these days Michael met up with most of the talent and production in a local restaurant following their own day filming. He was not drinking.

'A local customer appeared to take exception to Michael moving around the tables talking to the talent and crew – and they had a minor altercation (I don`t believe they spoke each others language - so it was brief).

'He did not use the "Gwynnie" word to a waiter and left the restaurant entirely of his own volition, and returned to the hotel with a couple of the team.

'We expect him to make a full recovery from the injury, but he will continue to be monitored closely.'
